WOMEN in Racing (WinR) hosted their first event in Northern Ireland last Friday with an ‘owner for a day’ experience with trainer John McConnell at Down Royal.

The day began with a private tour of Hillsborough Castle before heading to Down Royal where the group was greeted by racecourse CEO Emma Meehan who, along with broadcaster Pamela Ballantine, both gave the group an insight into their background and career paths.

John then took the reins and provided a behind-the-scenes owners’ experience with his runner Sanctity Of Space, ridden by Siobhan Rutledge, giving the group an authentic ownership experience. Sharon Monahan, WinR committee member, who organised this event, said: “What a fantastic day from start to finish. Giving our members direct access to the inner workings of race day - from trainer and jockey insights to parade ring access - makes racing far more accessible. A huge thank you to Hillsborough Castle, Down Royal Racecourse, John and Siobhan for making this event such a resounding success.”

The trip forms part of Women in Racing’s ongoing events and activities to give members insights into the world of racing and breeding in Ireland.
