Sir,

The long-running saga of the Curragh continues.

As you approach the track, the new grandstand is visually impressive but the fancy, cantilevered roof (copying Meydan?) seems to me a case of style over substance. Seemingly when the wind blows, it creates a sound not unlike a train coming into a station. The Wailing Roof, perhaps? Inside it’s all Upstairs and little Downstairs.

From the very outset, there has been problems. Over-hyped, over-time, over-budget, and now over-priced. Annual membership to Level 2 costs €950, plus €300 for a seat in the stand. To add a note of comedy, one of the benefits of membership is a free racecard! Naas have been doing this for the last two or three years!

After the first day’s racing they had to erect a marquee to accommodate the owners and trainers, who obviously should be the first people catered for.

If the misguided management continue to treat regular racegoers with what amounts to disdain, in an era of diminishing attendances, with an almost moribund betting ring, it’s not difficult to envisage the grandiose €80 million Curragh slipping into white elephant territory. Change is needed and soon.

Yours,
