Belmont tactics not justified

Sir,

I get The Irish Field sent to me in Chicago every week, which I enjoy.

I wish to comment on the running of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of our Triple Crown, won by Justify.

As many observers noted afterwards, the tactics employed on the winner’s stable companion Restoring Hope were questionable. His jockey appeared to restrain him in the early stages, not only allowing Justify a soft lead but also discouraging other horses from challenging for the lead.

When the race was over winning jockey Mike Smith could clearly be heard on television apparently thanking Restoring Hope’s jockey, saying: “You’re the man”.

I don’t think the manoeuvre affected the final result but it was upsetting to view. If the horse is good enough, you don’t need tactics like that.

Yours etc.,
