Madam,

Well done to Orla Quelly for highlighting racehorse to riding horse classes (The Irish Field, July 26th).

I think there should be two classes for this competition – one for graded runners and one for handicapped horses.

They should not be judged on their former ability, but on their performance on the day. I go every year to the RDS to watch this class and you never see a handicapped horse getting into the ribbons.

It is great to see all the Grade 1 winners in one ring but for people who have ex-racers that are not famous, even though they look, move and perform just as well in the ring, it is very disheartening.

The racehorse to riding horse class was started to give ex-racers a new career so two, three or four classes within the racehorse to riding horse category would give people with not so famous ex-racehorses a winning chance.

Yours etc.
