THE going was “deep” at St Moritz last Sunday for the opening meeting of the season on the snow-covered track. Some 7,500 spectators turned out to watch racing on the frozen lake and betting turnover reached almost 50,000 Swiss francs (€48,000).

British raider New Agenda won the main race for trainer Paul Webber. The seven-year-old by New Approach had previously won over hurdles and on the all-weather at Wolverhampton.

A 13/2 shot, he was ridden on Sunday by German jockey Dennis Schiergen, who lives in Switzerland. New Agenda won by a neck and is now favourite for the Grand Prix of St Moritz later in the month.

Another all-weather winner, Hakam, could be heading for the Grand Priz too after landing a St Moritz sprint by three lengths.

Now trained locally, the seven-year-old previously won five races for trainer Mick Appleby, including one in Norway.

There was a faller in the amateur riders’ race but both rider Alice Bertiaux and her mount Lonessa were uninjured.
