ALMOST 70% of the yearlings offered on day one of the relocated Goffs Sportsman's Sale were sold on Thursday.

Staged at the Goffs UK complex in Doncaster this year, due to travel restrictions in place in Ireland, the sale saw 99 horses sold at an average price of £13,828 (€15,105) and a median price of £10,000 (€10,924).

Last year's opening session generated an average price of €18,034 and a median price of €14,000, and the clearance rate was 79%.

Rockfield Farm in Co Cork provided the top lot of the day’s trade with its son of Footstepsinthesand, an own-brother to 2020 winning two-year-old Star Of Orion, selling to Kevin Ross Bloodstock for £50,000, on behalf of owners Paul and Clare Rooney.

Leading first season sire Mehmas accounted for the next two highest priced yearlings, headed by a brother to listed winner Just Sherry from the family of 2000 Guineas winner Cockney Rebel. Consigned by Michael and Ciara Carthy's Kilmoney Cottage Stud in Co Kildare on behalf of breeder Reginald Roberts, he was knocked down to the day’s leading buyers BBA Ireland at £47,000 for an overseas client.

Eddie Lynam later secured a daughter of Mehmas, an own-sister to a two-year-old winner this season in Fools Rush In, from Eoin and Stephanie Hanly's Grange Hill Stud for £44,000.

Eddie O'Leary's (Lynn Lodge Stud) Kodiac colt out of the listed winning Andry Brusselles was another stand-out, as the own-brother to recent two-year-old winner Lady Hayes sold for £40,000 to Aidan O’Ryan and Phil Makin Racing.

The Sportsman’s Sale continues tomorrow (Friday) at 10am.
