THE Galway Festival thankfully passed without major injury to any jockeys until Thursday’s the.tote.com Galway Plate which left two riders on the sidelines.
Ryan Treacy received the most serious injuries when falling at the second fence on the sadly ill-fated John Ryan-trained Foildubh who broke a shoulder.
Turf Club’s Dr Adrian McGoldrick reported yesterday: “Ryan has a fractured pelvis and clavicle. I spoke with him this evening and he is having surgery on his hip in Tallaght Hospital. There are fragments of bone in the hip joint that have to be scoped out.”
Danny Mullins was lucky to escape serious injury when Indevan fell in the early stages of the Plate. “He has a fractured vertebrae at L2 and will be out for about 10 days”, Dr McGoldrick said.
Kevin Sexton suffered a wrist injury when Catimini fell in the mares’ handicap hurdle, also on Thursday. He will have an MRI next week to access the extent of any damage.
Bryan Cooper was unsuccessful in his attempt to pass the doctor in time to ride at Galway this week. Cooper suffered a dislocated thumb in a fall at Kilbeggan a week before Galway and the injury needs more time to heal.
