FLYING Fairies (14/1) registered the second listed triumph of her career with a late burst in the Lenebane Stakes at Roscommon.
John Oxx's filly, who struck at this level in the Trigo Stakes at Leopardstown last autumn, arrived on the back of a fair fourth in the Munster Oaks.
She needed to raise her game but did just that, wearing down long-time leader Glamorous Approach, who was a place ahead of her at Cork, inside the final furlong before passing the post with a length and a quarter in hand under Gary Carroll.
Oxx said: "It's been a lucky race for me. I thought two furlongs out that our luck might be out as she was on the inside obviously going very well but with nowhere to go. But when the gap came she flew through it.
"She just likes a little ease in the ground. She won for Joe (Murphy) last year on good to firm, and she ran very well in the Group 3 in Cork the other day when it was more firm than good.
"I just thought that when she hit a race with softer ground that she might be able to win another race like this. We'll keep running her in those kind of races and maybe get a place in a Group 3.
"Who knows, when the ground is soft she may run above herself. She is a very genuine and tough filly, and a really nice filly for them to have back on the farm as a broodmare."
DOUBLES
Port Lions and the Carroll-ridden Burgundy Boy (100-30) treated racegoers to a thrilling finish in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, with the latter pulling out that little bit more where it mattered most.
The pair went toe to toe for most of the straight but Sheila Lavery's colt, who finished fourth in good maidens on his first couple of appearances, prevailed by a head.
Lavery said: "He's owned by my niece Joanne, who also works for me. He was bought as a foal but didn't sell as a yearling. He's big and people think big is going to be backward, but he's never been backward.
"Gary felt he would be suited by the hill at Galway, so we may look at the mile nursery there. He's not ground-dependent and if he's not sold, we should have a lot of fun with him."
Slaney Street's victory in the Roscommon Herald Handicap was the highlight of a double for Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning.
The battle-hardened gelding was fourth at Naas only on Saturday but showed no ill effects from those exertions and made his own running. He stole a couple of lengths two furlongs from home and although Auckland tried to challenge, with Room To Roam and Gustavus Vassa also making some late inroads into the lead, Slaney Street (9/2) had victory sewn up and beat Auckland by three-quarters of a length.
Bolger's travelling head lad Ger Flynn said: "He's in the Newmarket Sales on Wednesday and we'll see how he is in the morning. Kevin said he floated around in front, and loved it out in front.
"He was waiting for them all to come to him and they never came to him. He was delighted with him. He's been running consistent and run against some good sorts."
Panstarr (14/1) was one of the more exposed in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden line-up but led her rivals a merry dance.
Manning got the fractions spot-on on the Bolger-trained three-year-old, who established a gap early in the straight and never looked like being caught.
She had four and a quarter lengths to spare over runner-up Dawn Choir at the line, and Flynn said: "Kevin said he'd take the bull by the horns today. She broke well and floated along in front. He said she was pricking her ears the whole way up the straight, and she relished the step up in trip.
"She did it really well and is a nice filly going forward. She's a nicely-bred filly so it's great to get that win."
NARROW SUCCESS
Richard O'Brien inmates Alans Pride and Tom Dooley (4/1) were second and third at Tipperary last Thursday, but the latter gained his revenge with a narrow success in the Supervalu's Roscommon Apprentice Handicap after a real tussle for the length of the straight.
Aspen Belle has been a revelation this year and registered her second victory of the campaign in the Property Partners Earley Auctioneers Fillies Handicap.
Leigh Roche was able to dictate terms to suit himself on the 5/1 chance and she sped away in the straight to dispose of favourite Botanical Lady by five and a half lengths.
Good chasing prospect Powersbomb has been doing well on the level and ran away with the Lilac Rooms Maiden as the 11/10 favourite.
