A Grade 1 double and a big handicap chase win for trainer Willie Mullins rounded off the five-day Punchestown Festival on Saturday.

The juvenile Apple's Jade was the star of the show, blitzing to an all-the-way victory in the AES Champion Four Year Old Hurdle.

The 8/13 favourite had finished behind her chief market rival Ivanovich Gorbatov in the Triumph Hurdle but levelled the score at Aintree, and confirmed her superiority here with a thoroughly dominant display under Bryan Cooper.

Sent to the front from the off, Apple's Jade gradually wound up the gallop rounding the home turn and ran away from the field, with Ivanovich Gorbatov paying the price for attempting to go with her as he surrendered second to Let's Dance (9/2).

"It wasn't ideal to make the running," said Cooper. "She was very impressive - she quickened twice. She's one to look forward to next year."

Mullins added: "She had a very hard race in Aintree and I wondered if it would impact on her today. We let her take her chance as it's the end of the season.

"She looks very, very good. She won at Christmas but then we had an awful time as she was stiff and sore and we couldn't train her.

"She came back at Cheltenham and that put her right as she flew in at Aintree.

"I'd say we will leave it at that. There is a chance she could go to France but we'll have to see."

SHOCK RESULT

Whiteout produced a cracking performance from the front to land the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Champion Hurdle.

The 16-1 chance was much the lesser-fancied of Willie Mullins' duo behind favourite Limini, but after winning out the battle for the lead with Keppols Queen at the second last, she charged ahead under Paul Townend.

Limini scythed through the field to be the main danger approaching the last, but Whiteout had already flown, going on to score readily by four and three-quarter lengths.

Mullins and Townend were also on the mark in the 3m 1f Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase, the 4/1 favourite Pleasant Company holding off the fast-finishing Regal Encore to score by three parts of a length.

JP McManus, owner of Regal Encore, has had a marvellous week at Punchestown and saw his colours collect twice more on Saturday.

Anibale Fly (6/1) landed a punt in the 2m 4f Coral Handicap Hurdle for McManus, trainer Tony Martin and jockey Barry Geraghty. Then it was the turn of Nina Carberry and Noel Meade to give McManus yet another success when Stretchingthetruth ran right away with the closing bumper.

Earlier in the day Fletchers Flyer proved stamina is his forte when grinding out success in the marathon Madra Irish Dog Foods Handicap Chase.

Harry Fry's British raider remained a novice over fences after a winless campaign up until now, but travelled smoothly in the front rank under Noel Fehily.

The 13-2 chance took up the running a long way out in the three-mile-six-furlong test and though favourite Forever Gold gave chase in the straight, he could not get to the winner, who was two and a half lengths clear at the line.

Sizing Coal took third, while Folsom Blue was fourth.

Fry said: "Everything went foot perfect. He jumped for fun, and it all went right to plan the whole way. Noel was fantastic on him.

"It's great for the Masterson family who are delighted, and they've been great supporters of mine from the start.

"After his last gallop I've never known Noel to be as excited about one.

"He's a novice all next season, and it's possible he could go for the four-miler at Cheltenham and then go for a National."

The opening banks race saw local trainer Peter Maher gain a deserved Festival win after numerous placed efforts this week. In this three-mile affair his mare Mtada Supreme had to much speed for Thursday's La Touche winner Quantittativeeasing.
