ADO McGuinness may have to face the referrals committee of the Turf Club after being found guilty of possessing illegal animal remedies.

The trainer was fined a total of €2,500 at Swords District Court in Dublin on Monday for possessing four animal remedies without authorisation and two remedies without a prescription from a veterinary surgeon.

The case against McGuinness, 50, whose stables are in Lusk, was brought by the Department of Agriculture.

The Turf Club will now assess the evidence from court before passing it on to the referrals committee, who would then decide on what action, if any, might be taken.

"First of all we would have to review the evidence of the case from the court. That is normal procedure," said Josh Byrne, Irish National Hunt registrar.

"More than likely we would expect to refer the matter on to our Referrals Committee. That too is normal practice.

"We cannot say anything more at this moment in time or comment on what might happen until we have reviewed the evidence."

McGuinness said: "I have no comment to make at this stage."
