THE ultra-consistent Brick By Brick got back on the winning trail in the Listed Ballyhane Blenheim Stakes at Fairyhouse.
Jessica Harrington's juvenile had only won one of his previous six starts, but been second three times and never finished out of the first four.
Stepped up to blacktype company for the first time in his career, the son of Big Bad Bob was a 5/1 shot in the hands of Shane Foley and after travelling powerfully for much of the six-furlong contest, he finished strongly in the testing conditions to prevail by two and three-quarter lengths.
The Ger Lyons-trained Gobi Desert was the 8/11 favourite to follow up his debut success at the Curragh last month and, although he came up short, he was not disgraced in finishing second.
Harrington said: "He ran in a nursery last time and we thought he had a lot of weight so we held on to him. I don't think he liked that.
"Today he just let him flow and he loved it. He was always going easy and got the trip really well. I'm delighted with him. I was a bit worried about the ground and we nearly withdrew him."
Nearly Famous capped a great day for Harrington with success in the Book Your Winter Festival Tickets Online At fairyhouse.ie Claiming Race.
The 5/2 favourite scored by a length and a half to add to the trainer's listed race victories with Brick By Brick in the Blenheim Stakes and Beautiful Morning over at Yarmouth.
DOUBLE
Solar Wave showed tremendous resolution to initiate a double for Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning in the Become A Member At Fairyhouse Nursery Handicap.
The 6/1 shot was locked in a battle with Daliyah and Castrogiovanni for much of the final furlong but dug deep to score by a head.
"She's very gutsy and we might look at the Birdcatcher with her," said Bolger. "She didn't lick it off the street as she's out of a Galileo mare who had some training problems."
Bolger and Manning followed up when Focus On Heaven (4/1) made a successful comeback in the Dandy Man Maiden.
The daughter of Intense Focus had been off for the best part of a year but showed no signs of rustiness and she swept by Invincible Ryker to win by two and a half lengths.
Bolger said: "She's a good filly. I don't think the ground matters to her and it's just the way it worked out as she wasn't ready until now.
"She had a few little setbacks but has come good in recent times. Hopefully we can get some blacktype with her before she goes to stud."
Grand veteran Bubbly Bellini (13/2) continues to hold his form well and landed the Your Clubs Fundraiser At Fairyhouse, Enquire Today Apprentice Handicap under Ross Coakley.
COMFORTABLE
Tudor City capitalised on an attractive flat rating with a comfortable victory in the Christmas Parties At Fairyhouse December 16th Handicap.
Tony Martin's gelding has a National Hunt mark of 129 and showed, when third at the Galway Festival, that he is capable of taking advantage of a figure in the 70s in this sphere.
Pacesetter Panstarr came to the stands side in the straight, with Tudor City in her slipstream, and once he took it up, he only had to worry about World War, who stuck to the far rail but was a length and a quarter adrift of the 11/4 favourite as they crossed the line.
"You couldn't be happier. He did it well and everything worked out well as John (Breslin, owner) is home to see him," said Martin. "He deserved that as he ran a nice race in Galway and things didn't work out. Fortunately it paid off today."
Threeandfourpence had to pull out all the stops to break his duck in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden.
The 1/2 favourite was a good second on his Curragh debut but found Miss Zizi a tough nut to crack here, only getting the better of the argument by a short-head.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien said: "I'm delighted with him. We were a little bit worried about the ground. He came forward nicely from his first run and he won't mind stepping back up to seven. We'll see how he is and it's very possible he could run again."
Covetous ran out a determined winner of the Next Racing At Fairyhouse The Return Of The Jumps October 7th Maiden as a 5/1 chance.
