TODAY’S cancelled card at Navan may be run next Tuesday. The meeting was called off at 4pm on Friday after racecourse officials were advised that winds of up to 100km per hour could hit the track at around the scheduled time of the first race.

Navan manager Peter Killeen said: “The sensible thing to do was to cancel. After we received the latest forecast, I spoke to [clerk of the course] Paddy Graffin and we felt it would be irresponsible to go ahead. The wind is to be much worse than on Boyne Hurdle day and the eye of the storm is due to arrive here at just the wrong time.”

Killeen said Navan would be applying for a replacement date but did not expect to learn if one would be granted until Saturday. Next Tuesday is the only blank raceday in the calendar next week and would appear the obvious slot.

Leopardstown on Sunday and Monday should enjoy calmer conditions but it will be cold and wintry showers are possible on both days. Clonmel stage a replacement meeting on Wednesday and Thurles races on Thursday.

Sunday’s point-to-points at Ballycahane in Limerick and Bandon in Cork have been postponed until next Saturday, March 7th. The Carlow Farmers meeting is the only one still standing on Sunday.

In Britain, Saturday’s jumps cards at Doncaster, Newbury and Kelso are expected to survive. Both Doncaster and Newbury raced on Friday. There are also all-weather flat cards at Lingfield and Southwell on Saturday.
