Richest race

Gulfstream Park is set to host the world’s richest race next January. The $12 million Pegasus World Cup is the brainchild of owner-breeder Frank Stronach. The nine-furlong dirt race will have 12 runners and anybody can buy a starting place for their horse for a cool $1 million. Participants will not only share the prize money but also receive a share of the betting turnover, media rights and advertising.

Gilligan appeal

Galway trainer Paul Gilligan has appealed against the six-month ban he received from the British Horseracing Authority and is free to have runners in the meantime as long as he pays the £800 appeal fee by May 17th.

Newcastle AW

Huge entries have been received for the first all-weather meeting at Newcastle next Tuesday. The racecourse has installed a Tapeta surface which was approved by trainers and riders at a recent trial.

Next Tuesday’s seven-race card attracted 177 entries and there is £60,000 prize money on offer.
