IHWT seeks support

THE Irish Horse Welfare Trust (IHWT) is asking horse lovers, sport horse riders and racing fans to consider remembering the charity when making a will

“Legacies are very important to both the survival and the growth of all charities and very often it is what will help to keep them going during hard times”, says Sharon Power, co-founder and CEO.

For over 20 years the Irish Horse Welfare Trust has assisted over 1,500 horses and ponies with emergency care, rehabilitation and rehoming.

The charity currently has over 65 equines in its care at its farm centre in Co Wicklow.

A large proportion of the equines at the farm are thoroughbreds. The farm is also home to approximately 12 retired racehorses for retraining at any one time.

Power added: “At the moment, and for the first time ever, we actually have more people looking to rehome ex-racehorses than we can satisfy.

“Many of the horses we have presently are recovering from racing injuries and not ready yet. If there are owners or trainers out there at the moment with sound horses for rehoming we could possibly help with those.”

More information on the IHWT and how to make a bequest can be found on their website.

Lizzie Kelly retires from saddle

JUMP jockey Lizzie Kelly has announced her retirement from the saddle as she and her husband are expecting their first child later in the year. The 27-year-old made turf history by being the first woman to win a Grade 1 race over jumps with Tea For Two in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton in 2015.

She went on to land a second major success on the same horse, who was trained by her stepfather Nick Williams, in the Betway Bowl at Aintree in April 2017.

In 2018, Kelly claimed her first Cheltenham Festival winner with Coo Star Sivola in the Ultima Handicap Chase and enjoyed a second winner there in 2019 on Siruh Du Lac in the Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase.

Her other big-race successes included three on Agrapart: the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury, plus the Relkeel and the Cleeve at Cheltenham.
