Jack Kennedy still sidelined

JACK Kennedy expects to be back in the saddle for next weekend’s Dublin Racing Festival. He has been forced to miss the last two weeks due to an infection in his shoulder. He explained: “I had a plate inserted into my collarbone last October but it became infected and I had to have it removed. The stitches are due to come out next Tuesday and I should be back riding out the next day.”

New Stayers’ Hurdle sponsor

PADDY Power is the new sponsor of the Grade 1 Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. They replace Sun Bets, who are no longer in business.

Passing of Limerick breeder

BREEDER John McNamara of Golden Vale Stud, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, was laid to rest last Sunday. He passed away peacefully at Milford Care Centre after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Terre. Golden Vale Stud bred many winners on the flat and over jumps, notably Aintree Hurdle winner Bimsey, listed scorer Diamond Max, Easter Stakes winner Pelham and USA listed winner Conectis.

Worlds winner

JEROME Sheehan has won the Connolly’s Red Mills/The Irish Field Breeder of the Month competition for December. The Co Waterford man bred Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle winner The Worlds End.

Trevor Ryan to appeal whip ban

JOCKEY Trevor Ryan will appear before the Appeals Committee on Monday. He was given a nine-day ban for his use of the whip on Beating The Odds, who finished second at Fairyhouse on January 14th.

Coolmore buys share in Sottsass

COOLMORE has bought a half-share in last year’s Prix du Jockey Club winner Sottsass. The son of Siyouni will remain in training with Jean-Claude Rouget. Racing in the colours of Peter Brant, Sottsass is a half-brother to the same owner’s multiple Grade 1 winner Sistercharlie.
