THE record-breaking amateur rider Derek O’Connor will offer free advice to young jockeys in a series of schooling progression sessions at the Racing Academy and Centre of Education [RACE] in Co Kildare.
The autumn schooling courses are aimed at qualified riders [amateurs] and riders who are applying for A3 licences. There are two courses available: a schooling preparation course and a schooling progression course.
The ‘preparation’ course is delivered by RACE instructors and is aimed at A1 licence holders and riders planning to apply for an A3 licence.
O’Connor will give the schooling progression course, which is for riders who already hold an A3 licence. These days training include schooling over fences and hurdles, simulator coaching, video analysis of riding technique and an introduction to fitness. These courses are fully-funded by Horse Racing Ireland’s Careers and Racing Education Department.
O’Connor said: “There’s great young talent out there at the moment and I feel that the future generation of jockeys is going to be of a very high standard, so these courses are a stepping stone in the right direction for these young jockeys.
“I love working with young talent. Watching them progress through the day with us in RACE, and then to see them being successful of the track is brilliant.”
