DONJUAN Triumphant became the second pattern winner from the first crop of sprint star and Ballylinch Stud stallion Dream Ahead when coming home a five and a half length winner of the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte over six furlongs in France yesterday.

Jim Bolger’s Smash Williams, previously unbeaten in two starts, went off the odds-on favourite for the six-furlong race but failed to pick up on the soft ground and was well held in third spot.

The winner, trained by Richard Fahey for Middleham Park Racing, came into the race on the back of wins in an Ayr nursery and a listed event at York.

Donjuan Triumphant was bred by the partnership of Patrick Cosgrove and the Dream Ahead Syndicate, and he is a half-brother to the mile listed scorer Caledonian Spring.

Mathuna

His dam Mathuna (by Tagula) is a half-sister to the Group 3 Prix Chloe winner Wilside and also to the dual mile listed scorer Round Heels.

Before yesterday’s race Dream Ahead was lying in third spot in the Eurpean first crop sires’ list behind Zoffany and Canford Cliffs.
