DECLAN McDonogh has surpassed the 1,000-winner mark.

The former champion jockey reached the milestone last month but only realised it this week after reviewing his career totals.

Now 38, McDonogh rode his first winner in 1995. He has spent his entire career in Ireland and was champion jockey in 2006.

A son of trainer Des McDonogh and former jockey Helen Bryce-Smith, he has been associated with trainer Kevin Prendergast from an early stage of his career, His first Group 1 winner was Rebelline in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in 2002. Prendergast also supplied him with Group 1 wins on Miss Beatrix, Termagant and La Collina.

He has also ridden many winners over the years for trainer John Oxx and last year forged a winning partnership with Gordon Elliott, landing the Group 2 Railway Stakes with Beckford.

McDonogh went freelance late last season and spent a successful winter stint in Australia. This year he has helped Dermot Weld fill the void left by the sidelined Pat Smullen.

Weld provided McDonogh with his 1,000th winner when the promising Broad Street won at Navan on May 19th.
