Panstarr landed her first race for 12 months when taking listed honours in the Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes at the Co Kerry track on Monday.
The Jim Bolger-trained filly had run consistently well in defeat since her last success at the Curragh in September 2017 (a handicap) and enjoyed herself after herself on the rain-softened ground.
Wearing the Godolphin colours, the daughter of Pivotal led before the home turn, but was strongly pressed by Ship Of Dreams in the closing stages.
However, Panstarr (8/1) kept on gamely for Kevin Manning to get the verdict by a neck. The leading pair were four and a half lengths ahead of Hence in third. Although she had finished second in a Group 3 race previously, this was Panstarr's first win in a blacktype race.
Bolger’s travelling head man, Ger Flynn, said: "She likes the soft ground and goes on good and is one hopefully we may keep in training next year. It was good to get the win with her and Kevin was fantastic on her. The draw was key and he was very positive and strong from the get-go, an unbelievable drive to the line to get her to win.”
O'BRIEN DOUBLE
Aidan and Donnacha O'Brien came away with two winners on the card. They landed the 12-furlong handicap with the highly progressive three-year-old Astronomer. Up 9lb for his latest Bellewstown win, the son of Galileo ensured himself another major hike in the weights when scoring by seven lengths.
Trainer and jockey doubled up with Mount Tabora (10/3) in the premier nursery. Only fourth behind Zander in a maiden at the Galway Festival when sent off favourite, the Scat Daddy colt was 10lb better off with the winner here and reversed the form with a three-parts of a length success.
The all-flat card saw a wide-margin win in testing conditions for Sheila Lavery's Galway winner Burning Question. Gary Carroll's mount made all to win the one-mile fillies' handicap by 14 lengths.
