FOZZY Stack’s Alexios Komnenos, who was given a 10% chance of ever running again after suffering an injury last season, is on target for the Group 2 Boomerang Stakes at Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown next Saturday.

The son of Choisir picked up an infection in his hind suspensory, which had to be opened up and cleaned out. Stack reported that the vets even used special maggots, imported from Britain, to help fight the infection.

The three-year-old, who ran Churchill to a neck on his last start as a juvenile, in the Group 3 Tyros Stakes, completed a remarkable comeback with a win in the Group 3 Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown last month, having previously run well on his reappearance run at the Curragh. It was after that race that Stack earmarked the €200,000 one-mile contest as the target for the son of Choisir.

Stack said: “We just take each day as it comes with Alexios Komnenos but all being well he’ll go for the Boomerang.

“It’s a miracle he’s even running and if we can get him there in one piece, he’ll have a big chance.

“He did it well at the course the last day and this is only his fifth run.

“We’re also looking at the Matron Stakes for Diamond Fields. She ran okay in Alexios’ race the last day and hopefully she can improve from that. She beat Alice Springs earlier in the season at Naas.”
