ON THURSDAY online equine community HorseTribe hosted a fascinating webinar on horse behaviour called, Naughty horses … or are they?

The team welcomed Co-director of Equitation Science International, Andrew McLean.

Andrew discussed the origin and meaning of what riders and owners often interpret as ‘naughty behaviour’. Winner of the Australian Eureka Prize for Science, Andrew McLean developed and manages the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre, specialising in horse training and behaviour modification.

Horse lovers can easily ask so much of their horses on a daily basis and the majority of the time, they happily comply, but on the odd occasion when they say ‘no thanks, not today’, we often attribute that to them misbehaving or being stubborn.

But what if we knew that they were saying no because they were stressed, or confused? Would that change how we perceive and react to their behaviour? In the webinar, Andrew covered:

  • Understanding the root cause of ‘naughty behaviours’ such as spooking, napping, rearing and bucking
  • Exploring what these behaviours mean.
  • Explaining how we may play a role in reinforcing and creating difficult behaviour.
  • Gave guidance on what we can do to get rid of the negative behaviours.
  • Advised on how to manage your own expectations
  • How to Sign Up

If you missed the webinar, you can purchase it to watch in your own time.
