DOGS Trust has rehomed over 20,000 dogs since 2011 and now thanks to their new nationwide regional rehoming programme, Ireland’s largest dog welfare charity hopes to rehome even more dogs throughout the country.

In the past, Dogs Trust was quite restricted in their rehoming capabilities, having only one rehoming centre located in Dublin, however their aim was always to look at different ways to reach the wider country and rehome more dogs. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit and travel restrictions were put in place, the charity had to re-evaluate their rehoming procedures, and this gave them the perfect opportunity to set up their new regional rehoming programme.

During the initial lockdown period, Dogs Trust was inundated with kind offers to foster dogs, from families all over the country. This meant that dogs could be fostered close to where they were rescued and then could be rehomed directly from there to their forever homes. Thanks to the support of these caring foster families, the charity was able to reduce the number of dogs needing to travel to their rehoming centre and has been able to help many more vulnerable dogs find the loving homes that they need.

Dogs Trust is delighted that so many more dogs can be matched with loving families throughout the country, and you can see all of the dogs currently available for adoption by visiting their website DogsTrust.ie.

Fostering a dog

The charity is also looking for dog lovers who live in the Munster region to look after dogs for them in their home on a short-term basis.

They are specifically seeking adult-only homes, with or without other dogs, that are happy to take in dogs who will require some patience and training.

Help and advice will be provided throughout the dog’s stay. By having as much information as possible to provide to their future adopters, this scheme aims to place even more dogs in their happily ever after home.

If you could open your home temporarily to a dog in need, Dogs Trust would love to hear from you via email to Fostering@DogsTrust.ie
