FOR many, horse riding is more than a sport; it’s freedom, confidence and connection. Until now, for riders with limited mobility, accessing that experience has often come with significant challenges. However, a new solution being introduced to the Irish market is now helping to change that.
The HippoLib adaptive saddle attachment is designed to make horse riding more accessible without compromising safety or independence. Fitting onto almost any standard saddle, the system provides secure support at both the front and back, allowing riders to maintain balance while still experiencing the horse’s natural movement.
The product has been brought to Ireland by Colm Colgan of Hippocampe Ireland, a well-known figure in equestrian circles as the popular commentator at Cavan Equestrian Centre and a long-time advocate for accessibility in outdoor activities. With over 20 years’ experience supplying beach and trail wheelchairs to councils and organisations across the country, Colgan has built a strong reputation for delivering practical solutions that open up the outdoors to more people across Ireland.
“The goal is simple,” he explains. “To give riders the confidence and independence to enjoy the experience safely. We’ve already seen riders who never thought they’d sit on a horse again now riding independently.”
Automatic release mechanism
The HippoLib system includes pelvic support and an ergonomic backrest, ensuring comfort while maintaining correct positioning in the saddle. Importantly, it also features an automatic release mechanism, providing an added layer of safety in an emergency.
Easy to install and adaptable across a wide range of saddles, the device is already generating interest among riding centres, therapy programmes, and individual riders throughout Ireland.
The HippoLib innovation offers a practical step forward for para-equestrian participation, while also supporting centres looking to expand their accessibility offering.
As awareness continues to grow around inclusive sport and recreation, innovations like this help to ensure that horse riding remains safe and open to all, regardless of physical ability.
