THE BSc in Equine Science at the University of Limerick is a four-year degree programme for students seeking professional careers within the equine industry. The University also offers a two-year Certificate in Equine Science with the flexibility to progress to the Diploma in Equine Science and subsequently to the final year of the degree. The BSc and Diploma programmes meet the educational requirement for ‘The Green Cert’.
Students take core science, business, and equitation modules in first year, alongside specialist applied equine science modules. There is an increased focus on equine content in second year with further specialisation in the third and fourth year, choosing either Business Management or Equitation options to align learning with interests and career goals.
Commercially minded
The Business Management pathway is suited to students who are entrepreneurial and commercially minded and includes modules such as New Enterprise Creation, Management and Growth, Strategic Management, and Business Consulting. The Equitation pathway is ideal for driven, performance focused students who are keen to develop horse-centred expertise and are offered modules in The Young Horse, Equestrian Facilities, Performance Rider Development and Training and Managing the Performance Horse.
Students undertake a paid eight-month work placement completed in an equine or equine-related enterprise domestically or internationally.
Equine Science undergraduate theses have a strong track record for external recognition and have consistently been selected as finalists at the British Equestrian Trade Association ‘Thesis of the Year Competition’.
Graduates benefit from broad and adaptable career prospects with students tailoring their learning to their own interests.
