All-weather turnout

Five years ago CAFRE Enniskillen campus invested in an all-weather, wood-chip turnout overlying an open pore tarmac base.

They first became aware of the concept when Necarne Equestrian Centre built an all-weather outdoor turnout (70m x 40m) comprised of wood-chip on a tarmac surface. The open pore tarmac base, although hard wearing and durable, allows water to drain down through it and CAFRE find it to be very effective. At CAFRE the tarmac was placed on top of a well-drained hard base and they also chose a wood chip surface which is cost effective and again provides excellent drainage.

The turnout is fenced with equine wire and electrified polyrope on top. They chose concrete kerb stones as opposed to wood to avoid a situation where the horses had something to chew on.
