AS a recent graduate of Equine Science, I realise how fortunate I am to have studied in the University of Limerick. I am currently working for Godolphin, one of the world’s largest breeding organisations.

My equine science degree has provided me with skills and knowledge applicable to my job and many other areas within the equine industry. The course leaders and lecturers offered support and encouragement as well as passing on their wealth of knowledge throughout my four years in UL.

In third year the course gives students the option to take a business or equitation route. I chose business, and this allowed me to undertake modules such as enterprise and marketing management, providing me with a understanding of the skills required to start up and run a business.

Practical experience

As well as that, the degree gives students the opportunity to gain practical experience in any area they choose for a period of up to eight months. This is known as cooperative placement, which was invaluable to me.

I completed a seven-month placement in Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. Not only did the placement allow me the opportunity to gain practical experience and make contacts within the industry, it also was the contributing factor in my current plan to pursue Veterinary Medicine this coming September in Slovakia.

Looking back on my four years in college I can see how the course has developed me and given me the best start possible in to my future career.

I am proud to be part of the UL alumni.
