I GRADUATED from CAFRE in 2014 with an undergraduate degree in equine science. I found studying in CAFRE extremely beneficial as I had worked predominantly within the BHS teaching sector beforehand.
I, along with two other students, was awarded an internship with Coolmore for six months after achieving the highest marks within a breeding module. That was the first time I was introduced to the thoroughbred industry properly.
I was thrown into the deep end but learned quickly and soon, grew to love this industry. After completing the six-month internship, I worked for Coolmore in Australia and Godolphin in Ireland, Australia and America. I also moved into the racing side, working for Gai Waterhouse in Australia for a short period.
I am currently doing a masters in equine science in Hartpury University in the UK. The masters has completely altered my view of horses and thoroughbreds for the better. The more I learn, I realise the less I know.
My dissertation is an investigation into the effect conformation has on performance and injury in American thoroughbreds. Within my dissertation trends have become apparent within thoroughbreds that have previously not been reported which is very exciting!
I struggled balancing work with trying to squeeze my masters into a year but after the realisation that both were not attainable, I pushed my masters out to two years.
I would highly recommend if anyone is considering their masters, learn from my mistakes!
I received funding from racing welfare to do the British Racing School introduction to management course alongside my masters, for which I was truly grateful.
I hope to move into a senior managerial position within the thoroughbred industry. preferably within genetics or biomechanics, but who knows, I may up end up doing a PhD.
