MY love for horses started at a young age but it wasn’t until I went to Maynooth University to study Equine Business that I discovered my passion for horse racing. During my time in Maynooth I was lucky enough to gain international experience in the thoroughbred industry working for Godolphin America, Curraghmore Stud, New Zealand and Chris Waller Racing, Australia.

I commenced the Godolphin Flying Start programme in August 2019 and have since completed phase 1 and 2 of the course in Ireland and the UK respectively.

For the next six months my fellow trainees and I will be based in Lexington, Kentucky where we will be given the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the American industry. A typical day on the course can include lectures from industry professionals, visits to top-class stud farms and training facilities, attending the major sales and race meetings and partaking in personal development workshops to advance our leadership and management skills.

Applications for the 2020 intake are now open and will close on February 10th. I urge anyone who has a passion for horse racing and breeding to apply for this incomparable scholarship. Here are a few of my application tips:

  • Check over your CV and cover letter numerous times to ensure all spelling and grammar is correct.
  • When formatting your CV is it helpful to follow the layout and headings of the current trainees’ CVs which are on the Flying Start website.

  • For the video element of the application, ensure you are neatly dressed and video yourself in front of a clear background with no distractions.
  • Find something you are interested in/passionate about which has the potential to differentiate you from other applicants.
