NOEL Kelly’s Mighty Whitey (12/1) started off a good week for raiding Irish trainers in Britain by winning at Cartmel on Sunday. The 11-year-old took a handicap hurdle despite the fact that rider Noel McParlan carried 2lbs overweight.
Pat Shanahan recorded two winners at Hamilton on Tuesday bringing his total wins in Britain this season to 10. Sharp Defence and Tadhg O’Shea, who has ridden seven of the 10 winners, got the ball rolling in a six-furlong handicap. The three-year-old picked up well to win by just under four lengths. Wee Jock (11/10 favourite), ridden by Royston French, was the second part of the double.
Later on Tuesday at Stratford, Soleglad (6/4 favourite) provided Gavin Cromwell with a winner in the closing bumper. The booking of Derek O’Connor caught the eye and the son of Scorpion was well-ridden to prevail by just over a length.
Penny Jane (2/5 favourite) was the first leg of a double for Gordon Elliott at Perth on Wednesday. Paul and Clare Rooney’s mare had to be driven out by Davy Russell to hold off Dear Sire in the opening hurdle. Fagan completed the double, taking a three-mile novice chase. Also ridden by Russell, he looked to have the Punchestown Grade 1 hurdle scorer Beat That held, when that runner fell at the last.
