ONLY three others in the top 25 first-crop sires of 2018 had a better percentage of winners to runners than Rathbarry Stud’s Moohaajim. Six of his 14 runners in Britain and Ireland were winners, including Hard Taskmaster who won all his last four starts on four different courses and was sold for 55,000gns. His daughter Irene May was successful in both her starts, while another winner, Moojim, was a close second in a huge field for the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury. Two other colts by Moohaajim sold for 145,000gns and 65,000gns at the Newmarket Breeze-Up Sale.

Moohaajim was one of the three best two-year-olds trained in England in 2012, rated 116 in the European rankings, higher than all except the unbeaten Reckless Abandon on 117 and Olympic Glory, with Toronado, Sir Prancealot and Alhebayeb all below him. Bred on similar lines to Golden Horn, by Cape Cross out of a Kingmambo mare, Moohaajim retired to Rathbarry Stud in 2015.

Trained by Marco Botti, who paid 200,000gns for him at the Newmarket Breeze-Up Sale of 2012, Moohaajim won the Crocker Bulteel Stakes over six furlongs at Ascot on his debut in July. Four weeks later he was sent to Deauville for the Group 1 Prix Morny, in which he was a close fifth of 11 runners behind Reckless Abandon, George Vancouver and Sir Prancealot.

In September, Moohaajim was an impressive winner of the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes over six furlongs at Newbury by a length and three-quarters from Master Of War. His fourth and final start that season was in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, failing by only a neck to catch Reckless Abandon in a thrilling finish, with Gale Force Ten third.

On his reappearance in 2013, Moohaajim was a close third to Olympic Glory in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury, but then was injured in the Group 1 Qipco 2000 Guineas won by Dawn Approach and could not race again.

Cape Cross, the sire of Moohaajim, has been one of the outstanding stallions of the 21st century, with 114 blacktype winners to his credit including Sea The Stars and Golden Horn, who both completed the Group 1 treble of the Epsom Derby, Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
