LAST year’s juvenile division was a notably competitive one that included standouts such as Too Darn Hot, Quarto and Ten Sovereigns – each an undefeated Group 1 star.

While he has yet to strike at a similar grade, the Tom Dascombe-trained Great Scot finished only a length and a quarter behind Magna Grecia in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster in late October. That eye-catching effort, for which he earned an official rating of 110, came a few weeks after he had won a listed contest over the same trip at Haydock.

The time before that, he looked a bit unlucky to finish only third in a valuable listed contest at Deauville, slowest into his stride at the start but running on well at the finish and failing by two short-heads to take the top prize.

Great Scot made a winning debut over seven furlongs at Chester in late June, and his only other run was over that same trip at Haydock in July, when he beat none other than subsequent Grade 1 star Line Of Duty by a length in a novice contest. He is one of several by Requinto that have earned a triple-digit rating.

Breaking Stones, who ran three times in England before moving to Hong Kong, was a dual winner at two and finished third to Mehmas in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket. The William Haggas-trained Mojito moved up to a mark of 104 after a clear-cut win in a valuable mile handicap at York – his fourth win in all and his third in a row – whereas Demons Rock earned a mark of 102 and a good-sized cheque after his York nursery success. That was his fourth win in a row, and he later went to Hong Kong.

Requinto has plenty of other winners too, including Offline and Ursa who earned blacktype with listed-race placings at Naas and Tipperary respectively.

Winner of the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes and Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at two, Requinto is one of the fastest sons of leading international sire Dansili (by Danehill). He is a half-brother to the dam of Group 3 scorer Last Kingdom (by Frankel), and he is out of Group 1 Phoenix Stakes heroine and Irish juvenile filly champion Damson (by Entrepreneur).

That half-sister to Group 3 Prestige Stakes winner Geminiani (by King Of Kings) comes from the family of Group 1 stars Whisky Baron (by Manhattan Rain), Gilt Edge Girl (by Monsieur Bond), and Arcano (by Oasis Dream), and of Group 1-placed pattern scorers such as Tasaday (by Nayef) and Tarwiya (by Dominion),

It would be no surprise to see Requinto get his first pattern scorer in 2019.
