THE bloodstock industry was dealt a heavy recent blow when leading international sire Scat Daddy died suddenly.
Best known in Europe as the sire of juvenile Group 1 star No Nay Never and of last season’s outstanding juvenile filly Acapulco, the Ashford Stud resident was due to stand the 2016 season at a fee of $100,000.
He was a son of juvenile ace Johannesburg (by Hennessy), so represented the Storm Cat (by Storm Bird) line, and although its strongest effects are felt in North and South America, it should not be forgotten that multiple champion sire Giant’s Causeway (by Storm Cat) supplied several Group 1 stars from his sole Irish-conceived crop.
The Johannesburg stallions also include Teuflesberg (sire of Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint hero Trinniberg), Sageburg and Turffontein (a leading Australian freshman sire).
sire sons
He also has a number of sons awaiting their first runners and one of those is Ballyhane Stud’s Red Jazz, the Group 2 Challenge Stakes winner and Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes third whose first foals made up to 70,000gns at auction in 2015.
Red Jazz was a lightly-raced Group 2-placed dual winner as a juvenile, which suggests that he will get some fairly precocious types with his first runners in 2017, and over the next four seasons he proved himself multiple times in listed and pattern company over seven and eight furlongs.
His dam Now That’s Jazz is a winning daughter of Sword Dance (by Nijinsky), she is a half-sister to a pair of US listed scorers, and her five-times winning dam Mardi Gras Mombo (by Tampa Trouble) is related to a string of blacktype horses, including Canyon Run (by Dixieland Band) and Mr Expo (by Explodent).
successful
Winner of the Listed Indiana Derby, Canyon Run’s successful progeny, from limited opportunities, include a juvenile stakes winner.
Mr Expo also got some talented performers from limited chances, including the juvenile listed scorer Calce Clunes.
If you go back to the fourth generation of the family you will find that the dual Oaklawn Handicap winner Gay Revoke (by Blue Gay) was a half-brother to Red Jazz’s third dam Hold Harmless (by Mongo) and a full-brother to Blue Burst, a mare whose descendants include the US Grade 1 star Charon (by Mo Exception) and 2014 Japanese champion Just A Way (by Heart’s Cry).
Red Jazz is by the sire of Scat Daddy and Teuflesberg, he achieved a career peak rating of 120, he comes from a blacktype family that has yielded blacktype sires, and he made an impact with his first foals, all of which makes him an interesting prospect.
Won five races, £399,350, from 5 furlongs to 7 furlongs, 2 to 6 years including, Challenge Stakes, Newmarket, Gr.2, Spring Trophy Stakes, Haydock, L, European Free Handicap, Newmarket, L, also placed second in Dubai Challenge Stakes, Newmarket, Gr.2, Lennox Stakes, Goodwood, Gr.2, Jersey Stakes, Ascot, Gr.3, Criterion Stakes, Newmarket, Gr.3 (twice), Ben Marshall Stakes, Newmarket, L, King Charles II Stakes, Newmarket, L, and third in Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Ascot, Gr.1, Godolphin Mile, Meydan, Gr.2 (twice), July Stakes, Newmarket, Gr.2, John of Gaunt Stakes, Haydock, Gr.3, Spring Trophy Stakes, Haydock, L.
