SADLER’S Wells had a tremendous effect on flat and National Hunt breeding and part of that legacy is being continued now by his late son Montjeu.

A brilliant middle-distance horse who became one of the world’s leading sires of Derby-type horses, he has a growing number of sons who are achieving excellent results as stallions, and like his own great sire those successes are coming under both codes.

Douvan, Min, Nichols Canyon, Sternrubin and recent juvenile Grade 2 scorer Zubayr are a small selection of Montjeu grandsons with major National Hunt success to their name. A number of these look set for Cheltenham glory.

Fame And Glory was a top-class stayer who was an Irish Derby hero. He comes from an outstanding German family, has several relatives who are at stud, and he is one of the best horses to go directly to a National Hunt stud farm upon retirement from the racecourse.

Winner of 14 of his 26 starts over five seasons, the four-times Group 1 star now has two-year-olds. His foals made up to €55,000 in Fairyhouse last year, and up to €40,000 at the Goffs December National Hunt Sale, but unlike most stallions whose future appears to be firmly within that sector, he could have some runners on the flat first.

The top-priced colt from his first crop made 65,000gns in Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in Newmarket, and although both halves of his pedigree make him an unlikely early sort, he could be a middle-distance or staying star. He was purchased by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock.

Fame And Glory is out of the Group 3-placed Gryada and is a full-brother to Yummy Mummy, the dam of last year’s triple Group 1 heroine Legatissimo (by Danehill Dancer). She stays in training.

His dam’s relations include the Group 2-winning two-year-old Global Dream, pattern-winning miler Global Thrill and the Group 3 scorers Gonfilia and Gonlargo, but most notable among them is Gonbarda, the dual Group 1-winner out of Gryada’s half-sister Gonfalon.

That star filly is now the dam of the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and Group 1 Champion Stakes hero and stallion Farhh (by Pivotal), whose first foals made up to 90,000gns in 2015, and also of the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes winner Racing History (by Pivotal).

Fame And Glory, whose grandam Grimpola won the Group 2 German 1000 Guineas, looks sure to make an impact in the coming years and has been very well supported by breeders.
