The Green Desert (by Danzig) sire line has been tremendously successful and so when one of its sons, a classic-winning half-brother to a classic star, has his first foals appearing in the auction ring, it is hardly a surprise that some of them will fetch good prices.

Frozen Power is one of a growing number of sons of the sprint champion and outstanding English stallion Oasis Dream (by Green Desert) at stud, and his top-priced foals of 2013 were an €82,000 filly out of Gala Style (by Elnadim), a €60,000 son of Penny Rouge (by Pennekamp), and a 42,000gns son of On My Knees (by Fasliyev).

The first pair were sold in Goffs, the other one was in Newmarket, and this good early reception suggests that some of his yearlings will fare well at the autumn sales.

Frozen Power showed speed and precocity as a juvenile, winning a six-furlong Epsom maiden in July, following up over seven furlongs at Salisbury, and then taking a seven-furlong listed contest at Deauville.

He disappointed on his final two outings that year but bounced back for a good start early the following season, placed over seven and eight furlongs at Meydan, the latter against Munir in the Group 3 UAE 2000 Guineas, and then winning over a mile at that venue.

He was only fifth behind Munir in the Group 2 UAE Derby over 10 furlongs but, when dropped back to a mile two months later, he won the Group 2 Mehl-Mulhens Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) at Cologne.

Surprisingly, he failed to win again in seven starts, but as a classic-winning half-brother to Finsceal Beo (by Mr Greeley), he had done enough to ensure a good place at stud.

His half-sister was the juvenile filly champion of 2006, when her wins included the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac, and she came close to pulling off an historic treble the following spring, winning the Group 1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh, but runner-up in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) at Longchamp.

She was later placed in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes and in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup.

Their dam Musical Treat (by Royal Academy) was runner-up in the Listed Lupe Stakes over 10 furlongs, and their grandam Mountain Ash’s (by Dominion) 10 wins included the Group 3 Premio Royal Mares.

The stakes-winning third dam of Frozen Power is Red Berry (by Great Nephew), who was runner-up in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes as a juvenile, and the fourth dam is Big Berry (by Big Game), a stakes winner who was runner-up in the 1000 Guineas.

This is a family with a long-established history of producing high-class racehorses and its branches also include a filly who was classic-placed in Brazil.

Indeed, Frozen Power and Finsceal Beo are just two of their dam’s blacktype earners as they have a pair of stakes-placed half-sisters called Musical Bar (by Barathea) and Zabeel Park (by Medicean).

Frozen Power represents one of the most popular sire lines around, he is a classic-winning half-brother to a dual classic star, and his first foals were popular at the sales. He looks set for a rewarding career.

BALLYHANE STUD

Joe Foley’s Ballyhane Stud has long been associated with producing successful stallions and its current roster include an established sire, a leading sprinter, and two classic-winning milers.

Arakan (by Nureyev) heads the list and this high-class performer was again in the news recently as his son Toormore is the undefeated, Group 1-winning juvenile champion of 2013, and a leading contender for this year’s mile classics. His sire’s previous major winners include the Group 1 mile ace Dick Turpin and the notably talented Trumpet Major.

Dandy Man, a leading sprinter from the only crop by the classic-placed sprint champion Mozart (by Danehill) was among the leading freshman sires of 2013, getting the Group 2-placed stakes winner Extortionist, the triple Group 2-placed Parbold, and the dual stakes-placed Abbakova.

The two classic stars in the team will have their first yearlings on offer this year. Roderic O’Connor (by Galileo) won the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas and five of his first foals fetched at least €50,000 at auction last year. Foals by the Group 2 Mehl-Mulhens Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) winner Frozen Power (by Oasis Dream) made up to €82,000 at auction.

The Group 1-placed, Group 2 Challenge Stakes winner Red Jazz (by Johannesburg) joins the stud for 2014, and the team is completed by the Group 2-placed, stakes-winning sprinter Elzaam (by Redoute’s Choice) whose first foals are arriving now.
