LA Bague Au Roi extended her unbeaten record to three with an odds-on success in the Listed Betfred Mobile Henrietta Knight Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race over a few yards short of two miles at Huntingdon last Sunday, making all the running.

She has been favourite each time, has won by an aggregate margin of 17 lengths, and as she is an unbeaten blacktype scorer from a prolific blacktype family, it will be fascinating to see how she gets on when she goes jumping.

Trainer Warren Greatrex spoke highly of her after this latest success, and said that the bumper at Aintree is her main target for now, so it is likely to be next season before we see her in action over obstacles.

She was bred by Comtesse Bertrand De Tarragon, she is a daughter of the multiple Group 1 star Doctor Dino (by Muhtathir), and so is by the sire of this year’s Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) runner-up Physiocrate and of the listed hurdles scorer Ardina. They are both out of daughters of Kaldounevees (by Kaldoun; by Caro), La Bague Au Roi is out of a Turgeon (by Caro) mare, and although this talented trio all represent a similar cross, there is far too little data available to start proclaiming some sort of ‘nick’.

Sunday’s winner is by a top-class racehorse and she is the third blacktype performer for her unraced dam, Alliance Royale.

Her half-sister Franche Alliance (by Poliglote) has been listed-placed over hurdles in France, Reine Angevine (by Poliglote) got her blacktype when a tailed off 72-length last of three behind Pont Alexandre in the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle three years ago, and the best of the siblings is arguably Kaysersberg (by Khalkevi).

He joined the Greatrex stable a year ago, his career tally shows two wins in bumpers, four over hurdles (rated 137), and one from three over fences (rated 145), and his most recent outing was when fourth in a handicap hurdle at Kempton almost six weeks ago.

Reine Angevine’s first foal, a 2014 son of Presenting (by Mtoto), made €65,000 in the Tattersalls Ireland February Sale.

Alliance Royale is a half-sister to the Grade 3-winning chaser Plaisir Du Roy (by Legend Of France) and her listed-placed dam Allee Sarthoise (by Pampabird) is a half-sister to the listed juvenile hurdle scorer Roboratif (by Robore), to the dam of the Grade 1 Fort Leney Chase third Allee Garde (by Kapgarde), and also to Clan Royal (by Chef de Clan), the six times chase scorer who was twice placed in the Grade 3 Grand National.

If you go back to the fourth generation of the family you will find the multiple graded chase scorer Manhattan Castle (by Strong Gale) and the French blacktype hurdle winners Le Ronceray (by Ardoon) and Gramont (by Pampabird), as well as blacktype-winning chasers Golden Ring (by Right Royal V) and Ilians De Juilley (by Cyborg).

That latter group of horses are only distantly related to La Bague Au Roi, but there is more than enough in her immediate family to suggest that she could have a very bright future ahead of her.
