HARAS du Hoguenet’s middle-distance Group 1 winner Montmartre became the latest stallion son of Montjeu (by Sadler’s Wells) to get a winner at the highest level, either on the flat or under National Hunt rules, when Petite Parisienne beat Kalkir in the Grade 1 Gala Retail Spring Juvenile Hurdle over two miles at Leopardstown last Sunday.
Both represent the first crop of their sire, whose abortive first try at stud reportedly resulted in just one foal.
That first proper batch also includes Amour A Papa, who chased home Avenir Certain in the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) last summer, and this promising start suggests that Montmartre could become a very well-known stallion before too long.
Petite Parisienne was bred by Theirry De La Heronniere, she was stakes placed over 12 furlongs on the flat at Bordeaux last season and she was sold for €135,000 at the Arqana Deauville Summer Mixed Sale in July.
She joined the Willie Mullins stable in late December, finished runner-up in a maiden hurdle at Punchestown on New Year’s Eve, and with Sunday’s Grade 1 success coming on just her second outing under National Hunt rules, it is fair to say that she has made an exciting start to this new phase of her career.
Her dam Ejina (by Highest Honor) won three times on the flat in France and her winning siblings include the multiple scorers Regina Ejina (by Muhtathir) and Seven Even (by Turtle Bowl).
Ejina is a half-sister to the stakes winner Erinys (by Kendor), who has since become the dam of two stakes-placed multiple flat winners, and she is also a half-sister to the listed-placed filly Eubea (by Anabaa).
Her dam Enodia (by Surumu) won just once and is out of a two-times scorer called Eidothea (by Teotepec), but Enodia has seven winning siblings, one of whom is the Group 2 Prix Hubert de Chaudenay and Group 3 Prix du Lys winner Epaphos (by Acatenango), sire of the Grade 1-placed chaser Royal Verrie.
She is also a half-sister to the Group 3 Prix Berteux winner Eurynome (by Acatenango), and if you go back to the fourth generation of the family you will find the Group 3 Prix Edmond Blanc scorer Ephialtes (by Surumu) and the dam of the pattern winner and sire Eden Rock (by Dashing Blade), among others of talent.
Petite Parisienne is clearly a filly with a considerable amount of potential, and with her pedigree she is also one who could have a bright future as a broodmare whenever her racing days come to an end.
