THE Group 1 Total Prix Marcel Boussac - Criterium des Pouliches has a good history of producing future Group 1 and classic stars, and it was won impressively on Sunday by Found.

The filly, another good horse bred by the partnership of Roncon, Wynatt & Chelston, was a close third behind Cursory Glance and Lucida in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on her previous outing, and is now the ante-post favourite for next year’s Group 1 Qipco 1000 Guineas and Group 1 Investec Oaks.

The way she won on Sunday, and key elements of her pedigree suggest that she will have enough pace for Newmarket, but she is not absolutely guaranteed to stay the trip at Epsom, despite being a daughter of Galileo (by Sadler’s Wells).

Found is the fourth foal out of the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and Group 1 Matron Stakes heroine Red Evie (by Intikhab), a leading miler whose dam Malafemmena (by Nordico) was bred for speed. That mare won a listed contest over six furlongs in Italy as a juvenile, and although third in the Group 3 Prix du Calvados over seven furlongs later that summer, she was beaten eight lengths that day, and by almost as far when out of the frame over a mile at San Siro on her final start.

Malafemmena’s most notable sibling, on the flat, was Export Prince (by Habitat), and he was also by a stallion noted for speed rather than stamina. A talented sprinter, his best wins came in the Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis and Group 3 Prix du Bois.

PLENTY OF SPEED

Their dam Martinova (by Martinmas), who is the third dam of Found, also had plenty of speed, winning the Group 3 Athasi Stakes and the Listed Waterford Testimonial Stakes and she finished third behind Arctique Royale in the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

We know that some of the Galileos who come from speed oriented families are mile to 10-furlong horses, rather than Derby or Oaks types, so this raises the possibility that Found may find the trip at Epsom just a bit too far.

However, we will not know for certain until she tries it, and the fact that her full-sister Magical Dream was only beaten a head in the Group 3 Noblesse Stakes over 12 furlongs at Cork last year is encouraging.

That 105-rated filly won the Group 3 C L Weld Park Stakes over seven furlongs as a juvenile, she was not disgraced when sixth in the Group 1 Irish Oaks, beaten only five lengths behind Chicquita, and she rounded off her career with third place behind Belle De Crecy in the Group 2 Blandford Stakes over 10 furlongs.

Of course full-siblings can be quite different from each other. One could also point to Malafemmena’s half-brother Ninepins as evidence of Found’s potential to stay the Oaks trip next summer, citing his good National Hunt record, but he was by the noted stamina influence Niniski (by Nijinsky) and so may have been more his sire’s son than typical of the distaff side of his family.

No matter what her distance range proves to be, Found looked top class at Longchamp, and she has the potential to become one of the stars of 2015.
