DON’T Be (by Cape Cross) began her career in France but by the time she joined the stable of Sir Mark Prescott in June of last year, she had just a single win and a few placings to her name.

She won five in a row between late November and early February, all over seven furlongs on the artificial tracks, and at Goodwood in May she added a listed contest over a mile on turf.

After several defeats in stronger company, she returned to listed level at Dundalk eight days ago, winning the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Cooley Fillies’ Stakes by three lengths.

Bred by Paddy Barrett, and a 90,000gns graduate of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, the now dual mile stakes winner is the second foal out of the pattern-placed sprinter Faslen (by Fasliyev) and her relations include several who have won at the highest level.

Faslen is one of several multiple winners out of Ellen (by Machiavellian), a mare whose four blacktype siblings include the Group 3 Winter Derby scorer Gentleman’s Deal (by Danehill) and also Hathal (by Speightstown) who won the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup over seven furlongs at Newbury in September.

That 111-rated William Haggas-trained three-year-old could be a smart performer at around a mile in 2016, and it was over that trip that his dam recorded her best win.

Sleepytime (by Royal Academy) was the Group 1 1000 Guineas heroine of 1997, the same year in which her full-brother Ali-Royal won the Group 1 Sussex Stakes and that their middle-distance half-brother Taipan (by Last Tycoon) notched up the first two of his four Group 1 victories.

Their half-sister Oonagh Maccool (by Giant’s Causeway) won Grade 2 contests over eight and a half furlongs and nine furlongs in the USA, and their dam Alidiva (by Chief Singer) was a seven-furlong listed scorer whose siblings included the classic-placed dual Group 1 winner Croco Rouge (by Rainbow Quest).

Don’t Be was only rated 98 going to Dundalk, but she has been well placed to win seven times, including two listed contests, since joining the Prescott stable.

She is by the sire of Sea The Stars, Golden Horn and Ouija Board, the latter celebrity also the dam of the Derby hero Australia (by Galileo), and she is from a family that is no stranger to producing winners at the highest level.

All of this makes Don’t Be a potentially exciting addition to the broodmare ranks upon completion of her racing career.
