THE Tattersalls Ireland August NH Sale is seen by many as a second chance – for consignors, it’s Plan B for stock that didn’t meet the sometimes unforgiving requirements of the flagship store sales or simply missed their original sale due to various circumstances.

Then there’s the buyers who have orders left to fill and money left to spend, and it’s safe to assume that there are plenty in that position following two store sales where prices soared.

Buyers and consignors are behind the sale’s return on August 12th and 13th, after four years as the July Store Sale. When speaking to The Irish Field last month, Tattersalls Ireland’s bloodstock manager Orla McKenna explained: “There was a clear feeling that the timeframe between the Derby Sale at the end of June and the July Sale did not provide sufficient time particularly those looking to sell horses at home that were bought at the Derby Sale and looking to restock at August.”

That extra time has allowed Tattersalls Ireland to attract 59 lots that, for one reason or another, were unable to take up their earlier entries at select store sales. They include a Rich History half-brother to Old Park Star, now unbeaten over hurdles in four starts for Nicky Henderson.

The 579-strong catalogue also features half-sisters to Grade 1 winners Ballycasey and The Real Whacker, as well as a half-sister to Betfair Hurdle victor Soaring Glory.

While they may be the highlights on paper, in the past buyers have often been rewarded for being more forgiving on pedigree. Scottish National winner Captain Cody cost just €7,500, while the dual graded winner and twice Grade 1-placed mare Only By Night cost €13,500.

The latter also made a profit when resold after her point-to-point win and her handler Garrett Murphy repeated the feat with his €23,000 buy True To My Word, who resold for £160,000 in March.

Sam Curling achieved an incredible result with Echoing Silence, whose value rose from €28,000 to a whopping £410,000, and she has subsequently scored at listed level. Other recent point-to-point winners who repaid their August NH Sale investments include Night League, All Noise and Harzwood.

Buyers have another chance to recoup their money in the €100,000 MSL Mercedes-Benz Sales Bumper, with all lots offered eligible for the 2027 renewal at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival.
