NEXT week’s Goffs February Sale offers pinhookers their last chance to reinvest, with 266 weanlings catalogued for the first of two days’ trade.

Twelve months ago, the youngsters provided the top four prices, fetching between €92,000 and €250,000. The top lot, a colt by Blue Point, rewarded Tally-Ho Stud’s bravery with a yearling price of 575,000gns, while Ballyphilip Stud resold their €92,000 buy for 200,000gns.

Those with smaller budgets also reaped rewards, with John and Karen Hannon’s Killula Stud deserving a special mention for the Starman colt they bought from Mareshah Stud for €10,000. Reoffered at the venue’s Orby Book 2, the son of the leading freshman sire resold for €85,000.

There are four weanlings by Starman catalogued next week, but given his sensational start at stud, it’s unlikely that any will sell for such bargain sums. Those willing to take a gamble on stallions with their first runners in 2026 have a selection of weanlings to choose from.

Derrinstown Stud resident Minzaal is currently favourite in the first season sire betting after his first yearlings averaged €87,491. The top-class sprinter was bred by Ringfort Stud, who offer his sole weanling in next week’s catalogue

Paddy Power have priced Blackbeard at 6/4, with a smart start expected by the son of No Nay Never who won two Group 1s as a juvenile. Following withdrawals, he is represented by three weanlings at Goffs, along with a two-year-old filly closely related to dual stakes winner Servalan (Lot 288).

Starman’s studmate Persian Force supplied an impressive return for Piercetown Stud at the yearling sales, when they resold a €43,000 February buy for €100,000. Currently 4/1 for the freshman sire championship, the son of Mehmas has three up next week.

Other first season stallions with weanlings on offer include Space Traveller, Naval Crown, Baaeed, State Of Rest, Bayside Boy and Dubawi Legend. They are joined by the progeny of proven sires Galiway, Ghaiyyath, Havana Grey, Mehmas, New Bay, Sands Of Mali and Sioux Nation.

Something for everyone

The National Hunt weanlings on offer also include those by popular sires such as Crystal Ocean, Doctor Dino, Goliath Du Berlais, Harzand, Jukebox Jury, Kapgarde, Nirvana Du Berlais, No Risk At All and Walk In The Park.

Those looking to breed a future star are equally well catered for, with highlights including five mares in foal to Starman. Other covering sires proven on the track and in the sales ring include Australia, Awtaad, New Bay, Sands Of Mali, Sioux Nation and Teofilo, catalogued alongside exciting covers to young sires Good Guess, Henry Longfellow, Little Big Bear, Minzaal, Native Trail and Shaquille.

National Hunt mares feature with coverings to the likes of Affinisea, Jukebox Jury and Nitesche Has. Two well-bred breeding prospects were among a number of supplementary entries, which can be viewed on the Goffs website.

The select number of horses in training catalogued include Moyglare Stud’s well-related home-bred Evening Blues, who earned a rating of 86 for his two-year-old maiden win at Dundalk in November. The Blue Point gelding will be offered as Lot 293.

On Monday, Goffs will publish entries for the point-to-point section, which will take place at approximately 3.00pm on Thursday, immediately after the final breeding stock. Entries will be accepted from point-to-points this weekend, joining half a dozen winning and placed horses already committed.
