Flemensfirth tops

THE leading light of Tuesday’s sale was a €62,000 Flemensfirth yearling who was snapped up by Ciaran Conroy. Tommy Wade and Timmy Hillman, seated with John Dwan, were among those to make a play for the relation to the smart staying chaser Theatre Guide but they all had to give best when Conroy entered the fray late on for the colt who will be reoffered as a three-year-old. The grandson of the decent hurdler Erintante was offered from the noted nursery of Kenilworth House Stud.

Talented Solita

THE vast majority of the catalogue was given over to yearlings but it concluded with a brief mares’ section which featured the €58,000 sale of the talented Solita. The daughter of King’s Theatre was offered from trainer Paul Nolan’s Toberona House Stables following a career which yielded a Grade B handicap chase victory at Fairyhouse as well as a number of blacktype placings. Donal White, acting for Rathbarry Stud, outbid Frank Motherway for Solita and he reported that the mare would visit the operation’s new jumping stallion Karpino.

Martaline and Saddler Maker

THE catalogue contained just one yearling apiece by leading sires Martaline and Saddler Maker. The Ballinaroone Stud-consigned Martaline, who is closely related to last weekend’s Cleeve Hurdle winner Agrapart, failed to sell in the ring but was later snapped up by Dick Frisby for €47,500.

This price was closely matched by the Saddler Maker who cost Kieran Shields €46,000.

This colt is from the final crop of the Sadler’s Wells horse, who has made quite an impact with his runners in Britain and Ireland over the last few seasons, and he is out of an own-sister to the Ballysax Stakes winner Bobs Pride.

Presenting demand

THROUGHOUT the sale, yearlings from Presenting’s penultimate crop were sought after and they were headed by a pair of €38,000 colts. The second one was bought by Kevin Ross on behalf of a client who will reoffer the purchase. Earlier David Yearsley matched that price for a son of the Mtoto horse out of a half-sister to the Cheltenham winner Fundamentalist.

A return to the sales ring is also on the cards for a Presenting half-brother to the Grade 2-winning novice hurdle Winter Escape after he was knocked down to Darragh McDonagh for €32,000.

Sutton Place’s brother’s upgrade

ONE colt who could be the recipient of a major update this weekend was a son of Mahler for whom Noel Guiry had to go to €38,000. This grandson of Galileo is an own-brother to the high-class hurdler Sutton Place who will bid for a Grade 1 victory in tomorrow’s Flogas Novice Chase at Leopardstown.

One that could benefit from significant updates in due course is a €36,000 son of Flemensfirth from Ballincurrig House Stud who was bought by Anthony Gray. This colt is out of a Poliglote half-sister to the dual Champion Chase winner Master Minded and her first two foals by Flemensfirth sold in this ring for €110,000 and €60,000 respectively.

Hemmings

purchase

LEADING owner Trevor Hemmings was acting through Juliet Minton when giving €31,000 for a Westerner colt from a family he has already enjoyed notable success with. The Michael Tallon offering is from the family of the Hemmings-owned Turpin Green who was third in the 2007 Gold Cup.

Fame And Glory was represented by a €34,000 colt related to Made In Taipan and a return to the sales ring is on the cards for a €32,000 son of Soldier Of Fortune after he was snapped up by Garrynacurra Stud.

Pointing filly

THE highest-priced yearling filly on offer was a €30,000 daughter of Flemensfirth and she was bought by Longford-based Eamonn Finn. The latter reported that a point-to-point career was a possible option for the daughter of the Grade 1-placed Reine Angevine.

The latter’s first foal, by Presenting, topped the 2015 edition of this sale at €65,000.
