Lot 16 (c) Battle Of Marengo ex Kawaha

Vendor: Ballyhane Stud

Purchaser: Tom Malone/Megan Nicholls

Price: €50,000

The first crop of yearlings by the dual Group 2-winner Battle Of Marengo have already found favour this autumn and he was responsible for an £85,000 colt who was bought by Shadwell at last month’s Premier Yearling Sale. On this occasion, the Galileo horse was well represented by one of the early pace-setters, who will be joining a band of juveniles under the care of Paul Nicholls for the 2018 season. Despite being a half-brother to the stakes-winning juvenile Seolan, this colt cost a mere €12,000 last November and he showed a fine return on that purchase price on his return to the ring on Tuesday.

Lot 25 (f) Society Rock ex Kyanight

Vendor: Grangemore Stud

Purchaser: Gaelic Bloodstock

Price: €55,000

After his untimely passing last year, Society Rock’s results from his first crop of runners have acutely highlighted just what a loss he is and purchasers have been understandably keen to secure his stock over the last few weeks. The stallion’s appeal was further emphasised by Wednesday’s €160,000 session-topper and he was also well represented by this filly, who cost €20,000 as a foal. As a daughter of a winning Kodiac two-year-old who is a half-sister to the Molecomb Stakes winner Monsieur Chevalier, she made notable appeal for next year and was snapped by Ger Lyons.

Lot 112 (f) Swiss Spirit ex One Night In May

Vendor: Clonbonny Stud

Purchaser: BBA Ireland

Price: €21,000

The inaugural edition of last November’s Tattersalls Ireland November Flat Foal And Breeding Stock Sale provided several pinhooking success stories this week and one of these came in the shape of this filly. Denise O’Brien paid €2,000 for her at that sale and positive indicators on both sides of this filly’s family enabled her to show a good return on that outlay.

Firstly, Swiss Spirit has made a brisk start at stud with his first crop of runners showing up well this season. Furthermore, this filly is out of a Choisir mare and the latter’s prowess as a broodmare sire is steadily gaining momentum. Winter, My Dream Boat and Persuasive are among the top-flight runners who can boast Choisir as a broodmare sire.

Lot 205 (f) Slade Power ex Slope

Vendor: Loughmore Stables

Purchaser: Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock

Price: €60,000

Eddie Lynam’s star sprinter Slade Power is another being represented by his first yearlings this autumn and the dual Group 1 winner’s offerings this week included this attractive filly. Part of a popular draft from Kitty Cowhey’s Loughmore Stables, this filly hails from a notably precocious family and this wasn’t lost on buyers as she showed a fine return on the €20,000 she cost as a foal.

As a daughter of the Group 3-placed juvenile Slope and hailing from the same pedigree as the July Stakes winner Rich Ground, she will be worth watching out for next summer.

Lot 378 (c) Equiano ex Chrissycross

Vendor: Torard House Stud

Purchaser: Crampscastle Bloodstock

Price: €55,000

This colt was annother successful exponent of the first Tattersalls Ireland Flat Foal And Breeding Stock Sale having cost Pat Donworth €15,500 last November. Joe Murphy struck the winning bid for this colt and this is a family that has already served him well as he sent out the dam’s juvenile half-sister Deep Breath to win two of her three starts this season before she was sold on to continue her career in America.

Equiano’s profile has been boosted this season by The Tin Man who notched up a second top-level success in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
