JIM Bolger’s Glamorous Approach played a starring role at this year’s sale, sold to Ballylinch Stud’s John O’Connor for €280,000. The five-year-old daughter of New Approach is a dual listed winner and also amassed six blacktype placings over the course of her career.
Glamorous Approach may well be retired to stud but O’Connor indicated that she could stay in training for another year.
Aga Khan draft
A SELECTION of breeding stock from the Aga Khan captured the imagination of buyers and Tally-Ho Stud’s Tony O’Callaghan had to go to €150,000 for the owner-breeder’s Harrana. The winning daughter of New Approach is a half-sister to the promising Hazapour and they are out of a half-sister to Harzand. A date with Tally-Ho’s Kodiac is now on the cards for Harrana.
Another Aga Khan filly to fall to Tally-Ho was the twice-raced Elmaliya and she cost €72,000. The daughter of Sepoy is a half-sister to the Group 3-winning Edelmira and her immediate family contains the likes of Enzeli, Estimate and Ebadiyla.
Kodiac appeal
THE red-hot Kodiac supplied several of the week’s leading lights, headed by a €130,000 filly from Jockey Hall Stud, snapped up by Timmy Hyde whose previous purchases at this sale include the Irish Derby winner Frozen Fire.
She is the third produce of the smart dual winner Sindjara.
Earlier, French agent Marc Antoine Berghgracht spent €62,000 on a Kodiac filly from Tullamaine Castle Stud. This filly is a half-sister to the smart middle-distance runner Signposted and will be back for sale in either England or Ireland in the autumn.
Norelands Stud also offered a daughter of Kodiac from an excellent Niarchos family and this €60,000 filly was bought by Yeomanstown Stud. Her pedigree goes back to the great producer Chimes Of Freedom.
Return to breeders
FILLE Du Septembre returned to her breeders Mark and Elaine Clarke after they forked out €62,000 for the Moyglare Stud-consigned daughter of Choisir.
The half-sister to the Group 3-placed Boston Rocker made a winning debut for Dermot Weld in a Dundalk maiden last spring.
Top yearling
THE pick of the yearlings was a €140,000 son of Dark Angel from the Premier Consignment who was bought by Daniel Creighton.
He was the only one on offer by his sire and he is out of a French stakes winner. It has yet to be decided whether he will be reoffered or retained to race.
Blandford purchase
TOM Biggs, of Blandford Bloodstock, succeeded in his pursuit of the stakes winner Chica Loca. The daughter of American Post, who made €80,000, was sold with an attractive Acclamation covering and she is the dam of a Dabirsim colt who made €500,000 at last year’s Orby Sale.
Railton to the fore
ENGLISH buyer Jamie Railton was busy securing pinhooking prospects to be syndicated and he signed for two of the sale’s six-figures yearlings.
The more expensive one was a €115,000 colt from the first crop of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) and Prix de la Foret winner Make Believe. This colt is a half-brother to the high-class sprinter Hamza.
Railton also spent €105,000 for a Norelands Stud-consigned son of Bated Breath out of a half-sister to two stakes winners.
The previous afternoon he went to €55,000 for a nicely bred colt from the first crop of the dual Australian Group 1 winner Hallowed Crown. The Ballybin Stud offering is a half-brother to the listed winner and Group 1-placed runner Absolute Blast.
