THIS week’s Fasig-Tipon breeze-up sale in Florida posted significant gains on last year’s figures. The one-day sale saw 66 horses sold at an average price of $327,000 – a jump of 45% on the 2015 sale. There were 31% buybacks, down from 33%.

Four horses broke the $1 million mark. Top price paid was $1.8 million for a grey son of Tapit out of a Giant’s Causeway mare.

The colt, unsold at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale at $1.2 million, completed a furlong in 10.2 seconds when breezed two days before the sale.

M.V. Magnier was involved in two $1 million purchases. One was a colt by American Pharoah’s sire Pioneerof The Nile and the other, a shared purchase with Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables, was a colt by Ashford Stud stallion Uncle Mo.

The final $1 million lot was a Curlin colt which was sold to Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, a cousin of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed, and an owner who has had plenty of success with trainer Mike de Kock. However, Bob Baffert is set to train his latest purchase.
