Top lots

A €90,000 son of the eminent first season sire Bungle Inthejungle emerged as the top lot at the Sportsman’s Sale after Roger Marley fought off several of his breeze-up colleagues for the first lot into the ring on Thursday morning.

The Rathasker Stud offering had enjoyed a useful update in recent weeks when his juvenile half-brother got off the mark in Britain and his sire’s impressive first crop of runners – which has already yielded the winners of 24 races including the Group 1-placed Rumble Inthejungle - made his appeal all the more compelling.

Marley’s purchase will be back for sale at one of the breeze-up auctions next spring.

More joy for Bungle Inthejungle

Bungle Inthejungle was also represented by an attractive filly from a great Gerald Leigh family who cost Joe Foley €65,000.

This Newlands House Stud-consigned filly numbers a Cornwallis Stakes runner-up and The Broghie Man amongst her close relations and she is a half-sister to a useful two-year-old from last year. She was bought on behalf of Clipper Logistics.

Ross stocks up

Just as he was at Tattersalls Ireland last week, agent Kevin Ross was busy securing talent for owners Paul and Clare Rooney and his spending took in a €70,000 son of the much missed Society Rock. Tally-Ho Stud consigned this grandson of Rock Of Gibraltar whose two-year-old half-brother has made his mark in Scandinavia this year.

Just before this, Ross forked out €55,000 for a well related son of Champs Elysees from Abbeville Stud.

The relation to the very smart Lady Deauville and the top Japanese filly Fabulous La Fouine shares her sire with this season’s useful two-year-old Getchagetchagetcha whom Ross bought for the Rooneys last autumn.

Ross also gave €50,000 for a popular daughter of Dandy Man, who excelled with his fillies this year, from Lynn Lodge Stud.

O’Ryans in action

Both Bobby O’Ryan and his son Aidan were involved for several of the day’s leading lights and the younger O’Ryan headed his spending with a €60,000 daughter of Acclamation who was bought for a new client to go into training in England.

She is out of a half-sister to Watsdachances who began her career with Ger Lyons before going on to win at Grade 1 level in America.

Also set to head across the Irish Sea is a Zebedee colt who fetched €50,000 from Bobby O’Ryan who was acting for Keith Dalgleish.

This colt is out of a half-sister to the Santa Anita Derby victor Castledale.

A career in Britain is also on the cards for a €54,000 daughter of Kodiac and the Hurry Harriet Stakes winner Duchess Of Foxland. She will be trained by John Quinn after falling to agent Richard Knight and the trainer’s son, Sean.

Choisir sire line

Fozzy Stack and his father, Tommy, have enjoyed considerable success with the Choisir sire line and the Ayr Gold Cup winning trainer will be hoping that trend continues after he outlasted Willie Browne for a daughter of Starspangledbanner who cost €59,000.

This filly was sold by Baroda & Colbinstown Studs and she is out of a half-sister to the German Group 2 winner Lovelace.

BBA Ireland

Fresh from an industrious Orby Sale, the BBA Ireland team were again busy throughout the day and their acquisitions included a €55,000 daughter of Poet’s Voice from Ballyogue Stud.

She was bought by Patrick Cooper on behalf of owner John Hennessy as a replacement for the useful Bella Figura who was sold abroad earlier this year. Jessica Harrington will take charge of this filly.

Michael Halford will train a €50,000 son of Dandy Man who was knocked down to Eamonn Reilly. This colt is the second produce of the capable three-time winner Talitha Kum.

Approach fillies

This year’s sale contained two fillies by the Epsom Derby-winning sire New Approach and the pick of them was a chesnut from Lumville Farm who cost Michael Fitzpatrick’s J.C. Bloodstock €60,000.

This filly is out of a useful Marju half-sister to a number of classy runners as well as the dam of the recent Group 1 second and Ayr Gold Cup victor Son Of Rest.
