ON what easily the strongest session of the sale so far a €65,000 colt by Kayf Tara emerged as the pick of a host of quality foals on day three of the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale.
As expected, trade moved up several gears when some of the best bred National Hunt foals on the market came under the hammer and no fewer than eight lots made at least €50,000. Foremost among these was the Kayf Tara who hailed from the ever popular Goldford Stud draft.
Ben Case, who often contends for the leading lots at this sale, made a late play for the son of the listed-winning hurdle Whoops A Daisy but he was beaten off by agent Aiden Murphy. The latter reported that his purchase would be back for sale as a three-year-old.
“He’s a good colt, by a top sire and out of a quality racemare. He had a lot going for him and ticked all the boxes,” stated Murphy.
As day three neared its conclusion an excellent draft from Kenilworth House Stud lit up the ring and the pick of these foals was a €60,000 son of Shantou out of a half-sister to Carlingford Lough and Thisthatandtother. He was bought by Ben Case.
“He’s a lovely sort and he’s been bought for Lady Jane Grosvenor to hopefully come back here to a Derby Sale,” remarked Case, who also spent €48,000 on a Milan own-brother to Apache Stronghold.
“He comes from an excellent family and he’s by a very good sire who gets lots of good, tough horses in a variety of disciplines. It’s tough today, you’ve got to pay for the nice ones,” he added.
The Shantou was preceded into the ring by an excellent son of Califet, whose progeny have made such a fine impression in France in recent seasons. This colt is out of the useful racemare Quaspia and he cost Richard Rohan €58,000.
“He’s been bought for Nigel Collison, a client of Ballincurrig House Stud’s,” revealed Rohan. “We felt that he was one of the outstanding foals of the day and he looks a real racehorse. There are options with him and it’s quite possible he could be kept to race rather than going for resale.”
Throughout the day, the progeny of Kayf Tara were an especially hot commodity and the Sadler’s Wells horse was also well represented by €58,000 colt out of the smart hurdler Oligarch Society. Dick Frisby signed for the Mill House Stud offering, who will be back for sale as a three-year-old.
Others who will return to the sales ring at a later date are a pair of €56,000 sons of Flemensfirth. The first of these was a colt out of the high class mare Askanna, who went to Kevin Ross. The aforementioned Richard Rohan, acting for another client of Ballincurrig House Stud, then matched this price for an own-brother to the useful Space Cadet.
Alan Harte has the point-to-point field in mind for a €50,000 son of Martaline who was offered by Goldford Stud. Meanwhile, Timmy Hillman and John Dwan will reoffer a €50,000 Milan colt from the family of the hunter chase kingpin On The Fringe.
A Sholokhov own-brother to the ill-fated No More Heroes went to Coolmara Stables for €47,000, while Paul Cashman forked out €44,000 on a son of Kayf Tara having purchased the colt’s Great Pretender half-brother for €30,000 at this sale last year.
