ANOTHER good day’s trade, that was headed by a €160,000 daughter of the late Society Rock, enabled the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale to once again post an improved set of results earlier this evening.

From a smaller catalogue the auction produced an aggregate of almost €11.5m which was a 12% increase on last year. The average grew by 14% to €28,556, while the €23,000 median increased by 21 points, and both tallies represented new records for this sale.

Perhaps most impressive of all was the clearance rate which came in at 90% for the two days and this was a substantial progression on the corresponding figure of 82% for 2016.

The standout lot of today’s session was the superb Society Rock filly who was offered by Tally-Ho Stud, where her sire stood until his untimely passing last year. Last November the filly was picked up for just €14,500 in this sales ring but, with her sire having enjoyed a superb season, her resale price was expected to come in at multiples of that initial outlay.

Joe Foley, acting for Clipper Logisitics, and agent Matt Coleman did battle for the second produce of the listed-placed Coolminx and they exchanged bids from around €80,000 onwards before Foley held sway when the price hit €160,000.

“She’s a star filly. She’s exceptional and I’m delighted to be able to buy her off such a great farm in Tally-Ho,” said Foley. “She’s out of a good and tough racemare whose grandam was also a good and tough sort and we were just very keen to have her.”

BALLYMACOLL

Much earlier in the day Foley forked out €100,000 for a son of Foostepsinthesand belonging to Cloughmealy Stud. The colt hails from an outstanding Ballymacoll Stud dynasty while he enjoyed a nice update this summer with his dam being a half-sister to Aidan O’Brien’s talented filly Wild Irish Rose.

“We were very keen to get him. He’s a nice horse who we have liked all week. He’s from a classy family, the Pivotal mare was an attraction and we were under bidder on Larchmont Lad (a Group 3-winning son of Foostepsinthesand) here a couple of years ago,” reflected Foley.

The session’s second highest price came late in the day when Ger Lyons went to €110,000 to secure a Kodiac colt offered by Ballyhimikin Stud.

“He’s a lovely colt and I just thought there was something different about him. He’s the first Kodiac I’ve bought this year and I’ve a couple of clients in mind for him,” declared Lyons.

The €100,000 mark was also reached by a colt from the first crop of the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest scorer Garswood and his sale put the seal on an excellent day for Tally-Ho. The €38,000 foal purchase, whose dam is a half-sister to a Group 1 winner in Australia, will be joining Johnny Murtagh.

“Gill (Richardson) really liked him and so did I. We’ve been struggling to buy them here so we had to push the boat out for this colt but he’s very nice and very athletic and he’s coming off a top farm that produces a lot of good horses,” remarked Murtagh.

BIG IMPRESSION

Eddie Lynam’s brilliant sprinter Slade Power was among the first crop sires to make a big impression this week and he supplied an €80,000 filly who will be joining Richard Fahey after being knocked down to Rabbah Bloodstock. The filly is a half-sister to the Dee Stakes scorer Viren’s Army who topped this sale when fetching €115,000 three years ago.

“She’s going to be going into training with Richard for a new owner. She’s a lovely filly, one of our picks of the sale, and she’s from the first crop of a very exciting young sire,” reported Aidan O’Ryan.

Richard Hannon will take charge of an €80,000 Dark Angel filly who was picked up by Ross Doyle. The daughter of the stakes-winning Waveband is a half-sister to a couple of winners, including the Hannon-trained juvenile Sallab.

“Richard likes the two-year-old and thinks he’s quite a nice horse. This filly is a good looking sort by one of the sires of the moment and she’s coming off a good farm,” stated Doyle.

Elsewhere, Martyn Meade will take charge of a €78,000 son of Acclamation who was snapped up by Dermot Farrington. The colt shares his sire with Meade’s dual Group 2 victor Aclaim.

The September Sale concludes its three-day run on Thursday with the one day Part II section of the catalogue.
