SOME may still refer to it as the ‘Ascot Sale’ but the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale has settled into its new home at Newmarket and the 2022 edition takes place next Tuesday.
The switch in venue was prompted by Covid and the results and feedback were so good that Tattersalls decided to leave the sale at its headquarters.
The undoubted star of last year’s sale has turned out to be Bradsell, the Coventry Stakes winner picked up for just 12,000gns as a yearling before being sold on at the breeze-up sales. Another notable graduate from the 2021 auction is Eddie’s Boy, winner of the Weatherbys Super Sprint having been acquired for only 45,000gns.
There are 313 yearlings in this year’s catalogue and all of them are eligible for the £100,000 Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes as well as the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes. Last Saturday’s edition of the former race was won by Amichi, a 15,500gns buy.
Some 88 of the fillies catalogued are also registered for the lucrative Great British Bonus Scheme and eligible to win up to £20,000 in bonus prize money per qualifying race.
The largest consignment of yearlings will come from Tally-Ho Stud with 17 lots catalogued, followed by Trickledown Stud with 13, while last year’s sale-topping consignor Petches Farm will feature a small but select draft of four colts.
In total there are siblings to 216 two-year-old winners catalogued and 79 yearlings out of dams who won at two.
Sires with yearlings catalogued include proven Group 1 producers Acclamation, Aclaim, Ardad, Australia, Bated Breath, Bungle Inthejungle, Camacho, Churchill, Dandy Man, Dark Angel, Footstepsinthesand, Gleneagles, Havana Gold, Iffraaj, Invincible Spirit, Kodiac, Make Believe, Mastercrasftsman, Mehmas, Nathaniel, New Bay, Oasis Dream, Showcasing, Starspangledbanner, Territories, Zoffany and Zoustar.
Whitsbury Manor Stud’s freshman sire Havana Grey led the way numerically in the inaugural Somerville Yearling Sale and once again he has the highest number of yearlings catalogued with 21.
Stallions hoping to follow in his footsteps at this year’s sale with their first crop of yearlings include Advertise, Blue Point, Calyx, Eqtidaar, Inns Of Court, Invincible Army, Land Force, Magna Grecia, Masar, Phoenix Of Spain, Soldier’s Call and Ten Sovereigns.
Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said: “It is a fitting tribute to the sale’s ethos of precocious, well conformed yearlings that the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale and its predecessor, the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale, have produced Royal Ascot two-year-old winners for two consecutive years.
