ROYAL Ascot winner Gatewood is due to stand at John Lynch’s Windmill View Stud in Co Galway. The seven-year-old son of Galileo has eight wins to his name, with career earnings of over €570,000 from four years on the track.

A winner at three, the following season began with three wins on-the-trot, including a listed win at Royal Ascot, and after two placings at group level, was sent to Australia where he won the Group 3 Geelong Cup that same year.

Three times stakes-placed the following season, he achieved back-to-back listed wins, a Group 3 victory and a Group 2 second as a six-year-old.

Owner-breeder George Strawbridge praised his ultra-consistent charge, saying: “Gatewood gave me the thrill of a lifetime: my first win at Royal Ascot.

“He was such an exciting horse to watch: coming from the back at the end of the race with an amazing turn of foot. Gatewood is one of the most honest horses I have ever bred - he always gave his best in every race.”

The son of successful sire-of-sires Galileo is out of the Group 3-winning mare Felicity, a full-sister to group winner and new sire Aiken, and a half-sister to dual group winner Sleeping Indian. Her Sadler’s Wells dam was placed in the Italian Oaks and is a half-sister to Royal Whip Stakes winner Bach, out of the high-class Group 1 winner Producer.

The deal was brokered by Micheal Orlandi of Compas Equine, with Gatewood to stand at Windmill View Stud for a fee of €1,500. Based in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, the stud can be contacted on +353 (0)85 224 5808.
