THE final day of the Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket played host to the first juvenile Group 1 races in Britain with Tenebrism and Perfect Power both displaying devastating speed to land their respective events and stake their claim to be leader of their generation.

The fillies were the first to take to the stage in the Cheveley Park Stakes with Sacred Bridge sent off favourite to endorse the form of the Irish fillies which some felt were ahead of her British counterparts.

It was not to be for the Ger Lyons-trained filly who disappointed on the day, but nevertheless victory went the way of Ireland and Aidan O’Brien’s once-raced filly Tenebrism (113).

The inexperience of winning just a Naas maiden showed up when the gates opened as the daughter of Caravaggio was slow to stride, while the second, Flotus (110), was quick to hit top stride, utilising a rail position to stretch the field.

Ryan Moore was quick to obtain a similar track position on the rail, albeit five lengths adrift of the leader which, as the race developed, gave him and his mount the smoothest passage to the line as they clocked an impressive 33.65 seconds for the final three furlongs. The finishing effort included covering the final furlong 0.72 seconds faster than her closest rival as she finished with purpose.

Meanwhile, the rest of the field were falling over one another in a bid to make a challenge.

Sandrine (105+) emerges from the race as the second-best filly in my opinion as she was disadvantaged by being drawn wide. The most notable furlong of the race for Andrew Balding’s flly was the fifth as she posted a 10.92 second furlong that was only surpassed by Illustrating who finished sixth.

The effort was not enough to mount a serious challenge, but it was part of a closing sectional of 34.44 seconds that was faster than Flotus who stopped the clock at 34.60 seconds having enjoyed the ideal passage.

Skirmish

Desert Dreamer (103) continues to hold her form well and was as close to Sandrine as at York despite enduring a troubled passage. A closing sectional of 34.48 seconds was achieved despite a skirmish with Have A Good Day before she changed course dramatically to follow the same wide route as Sandrine. The daughter of Oasis Dream can land a lesser group race granted a change of luck.

After Illustrating (95) posted the fastest furlong (10.87 seconds) of the field she faded, giving the impression she will be better suited by a return to the minimum trip.
